We’re a product-driven team that takes interface quality seriously. Finance software has a long history of bad UX. We’re changing that — and this role sits at the centre of that effort.

The Role

We’re looking for a Junior UX / UI Developer with 0–2 years of experience who’s excited about both sides of the craft — design thinking and frontend code.

You won’t own the design system on day one. You’ll learn it, contribute to it, and grow into bigger ownership as you go. You’ll work closely with senior designers and engineers, ship real features, and get hands-on with both UI design and React development from the start.

We don’t expect mastery. We do expect curiosity, attention to detail, and a willingness to take feedback and iterate. If you genuinely care about how interfaces look, feel, and behave — and you want to build, not just design — this is the right role.

What You’ll Do

Design

• Design System Contribution: Contribute to Bluecopa’s design system — components, patterns, and documentation — under the guidance of senior designers.
• UX Audits: Help conduct UX audits on shipped features and turn observations into prioritised improvements alongside the team.
• Ideation: Communicate design ideas clearly through sketches, wireframes, diagrams, or any tool that gets the point across (Figma not required).
• Feature Design: Work through UI problems on smaller features — forms, tables, filters, dashboards — with mentorship on the harder calls.
• Usability Reviews: Help run lightweight usability reviews and synthesise feedback into design improvements.
• Attention to Detail: Pay attention to the details: spacing, alignment, hierarchy, empty states, error states.

Development

• React Implementation: Build UI components and screens in React, translating designs into working interfaces.
• AI-Assisted Coding: Use AI coding assistants (Copilot, Cursor, or similar) effectively to ship faster — while staying in control of the output.
• API Integration: Wire UI to backend APIs — handle loading, empty, and error states properly.
• Design Tokens: Implement design tokens in code (CSS variables, Tailwind config, or equivalent) and keep design and code in sync.
• Engineering Collaboration: Collaborate with backend engineers when API shapes need to evolve to serve the UI better.

Systems & Quality

• Component Library: Maintain and extend the component library so engineers can self-serve.
• Visual QA: Review your own and others’ work for visual consistency — catch regressions before they ship.
• Documentation: Document the components and patterns you build clearly enough that the next person doesn’t have to ask.

What We’re Looking For

Design (Mandatory)

• Experience: 0–2 years of experience designing UI — internships, side projects, freelance, or school work all count, as long as you can walk us through the thinking.
• Portfolio: A portfolio (or 2–3 case studies) showing how you think, not just final shots. Process, iterations, and tradeoffs matter more than polish.
• Visual Communication: Ability to communicate design ideas visually — sketches, wireframes, or diagrams. Figma familiarity is a plus but not required.
• Design Fundamentals: Strong fundamentals: typography, spacing, hierarchy, colour, contrast — and the eye to notice when something is off.
• Domain Interest: Genuine interest in dense, functional interfaces: tables, filters, forms, dashboards, multi-step flows.

Development (Mandatory)

• React Fundamentals: Working knowledge of React — components, props, state, core hooks. You’ve built something you can show us.
• Prototyping: Comfortable taking a sketch, wireframe, or written spec and turning it into working UI.
• AI Tooling: Practical experience (or strong willingness) to use AI coding assistants to move faster — driving the output, not blindly accepting it.
• API Consumption: Can consume REST APIs and handle loading, empty, and error states.
• Web Basics: Solid HTML and CSS fundamentals — you understand how the browser actually works.
• Styling: Familiar with Tailwind or a similar utility-first approach.
• Version Control: Comfortable with Git basics — branches, PRs, code review.

Ways of Working

• Curiosity: Curious by default — you ask why, not just what.
• Feedback Loop: Take feedback well and iterate without getting defensive.
• Communication: Communicate clearly in writing and in person.
• Flexibility: Comfortable working in a small team where roles flex and you’ll occasionally pick up things outside your title.

Good to Have

• Familiarity with Figma or similar design tools.
• Exposure to TypeScript.
• Awareness of accessibility standards (WCAG basics).
• Familiarity with charting libraries (Recharts, ECharts, D3, or similar).
• Interest in finance, data, or enterprise SaaS products.
• Side projects, open source contributions, or anything that shows you build things outside work.
• Data-Backed Mindset: Comfortable making judgement calls when you don’t have all the answers, but once an idea is in the wild, the data leads. You set up instrumentation, define what “working” looks like, and double down or kill based on what you see — not what you expected.

Mindset

• Dual-Discipline Passion: You care about how interfaces look, feel, and behave — and you want to be the one who builds them, not just hands them off. You’re as comfortable opening a code editor as opening a design tool. You don’t think “that’s an engineering problem” or “that’s a design problem” — you think it’s a product problem.
• The "Micro" Eye: You notice the spacing that’s 4px off, the hover state nobody added, the loading state nobody designed. You don’t have all the answers yet, but you ask good questions and you’re hungry to learn from the people around you.
